Former Chancellor Schröder represents Germany in Cuba
Germany will be represented by former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder at the mourning ceremony for the late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro in Havana. The Federal Government and the Federal President had agreed to this, a government spokeswoman said.
According to the "Bild" newspaper, Schröder was already on Monday on behalf of the Federal Government and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) to Cuba. In Havana on Wednesday, a mourning ceremony for Castro takes place on the Square of the Revolution.
Castro had died on Friday evening (local time) at the age of 90 years in Cuba's capital. One day later, his corpse was cremated and a nine-day state sentence imposed. At the end, the urn is to be buried with the ashes of the long-standing revolutionary leader in Santiago de Cuba in the east of the Caribbean island.
On Monday, the federal government pointed out the historic importance of Castro, as well as its responsibility for violations of human rights. Castro had ruled the country for 47 years and withdrew from active politics in 2006.
