Leyen admits "laziness"

Austria has chosen and decided against the fall to the right. However, the question remains: is Europe on the brink?

Anne Will invited on Sunday evening to talk about the future of a community of states, which no one wants anymore. Or is it?

The guests

Ursula von der Leyen (CDU), Minister of Defense
Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), Federal Minister for the Interior in Austria
Ulrike Guérot, Professor of European Policy and Democracy Research
Dirk Schümer, European correspondent for "The World"

Leyen admits "laziness"

The topic

A quarter of an hour before the election result from Italy became known, Anne WillsTalk ended on "Europe on the Kippen - What values one still us?". The discussion was under the impression of the presidential election in Austria, in which ex-Greens boss Alexander Van der Bellen prevailed against the right-wing populist Norbert Hofer.

The fronts

In the end, Ursula von der Leyen said there were only supporters of Europe in the round, but they wanted to go different ways. That the German Minister of Defense would be per Europe and per EU was no surprise.

Dirk Schümer, on the other hand, sees the current EU as a failure, and he also made it clear. On the other hand, Wolfgang Sobotka was the subject of the discussion. The OVP man did not want to make a commitment to his future Federal President, van der Bellen, more than a Greenson, as a serious politician. Taking the will of the voters seriously sounds different.

And Ulrike Guérot? She was always with Schümer, seemed to want to prove the "world" correspondent a right-close attitude - which partially succeeded.

Fact of the evening

The "Leyen" showed "the ease" of the election result in Austria. But she also thought that almost half of the people in Austria were right on the right. What will you think of the latest Bertelsmann study, which was presented in the ARD in the evening? 55 per cent of people in Europe are globalization advocates, but 45 per cent are afraid of it.

Excitement of the evening

It was about the decline of Europe. To the question of why millions of Europeans turn away from Brussels, whether the EU, as currently set up, is still repairable. Ursula von der Leyen believes that the institution can continue to function if the national states only wanted it. Schümer, on the other hand, thought it was exactly the opposite. Only when the EU functioned would the national states accept them again. The hen egg problem.

For Guérot not even the core problem, because for the democracies, it is necessary to start again with a more fundamental question: What would the new Europe look like? And also a Europe with the right-wing populists who wanted to defend not only their own state, but also Europe.

After all, the EU as an enemy image, Angela Merkel as guilty for every crisis: In it, everyone agreed that this should be the end. But how this could work - the guests at Anne Will were completely disunited.

Moderators moment

Anne Will asked the Leyen what else the politician had to think of, except the problem, that the problems had to be taken seriously. "What do you do to take seriously?" And, lo and behold, Leyen ventured out of the cover, confessed: "We have developed a decent laziness." For a politician almost an ear of a criticism at her own stand.

Moderators question of the evening

But what is Europe really for? Anne Will wanted to know from the Minister of Defense. "What kind of people do people really want?" The hostess asked. And it was clear from the Leyen: infrastructure is a matter for the local authorities or for the countries, the pension is the responsibility of the states, but topics like the Internet, social media, cybercrime, but also migration have to be topics of the EU. "Europe should take care of the big issues, not small ones."

Low point of the evening

Speaking of immigration and legal populism: Norbert Hofer in Austria had used "human vocabulary" (Guérot) in the election campaign. Wolfgang Sobotka seemed to have not only forgotten this, but also made use of this pot. He began the problem of economic refugees with the words: "When we import people who have only economic interests ..."

What remains open

It was only at 11 pm that Italy became aware of a new government crisis after the Constitutional Treaty. Minister President Matteo Renzi had linked the outcome of popular vote with the future of his government. While Austria is finally clear, Italy is facing a difficult test. And probably also the European Union, because behind Renzi, the EU-critical oppositional five-star movement with its leader Beppe Grillo has long been in position.
